I was very, very blessed to have a wonderful group of musicians! Since the title of the concert is “Old is the new New”, I have named them “The New Band.” More to come on each of these artists – subscribe to the blog to find out more about them!
Band leader and Upright Bass – Joseph “Joebass” DeJarnette of Sonic New York and formerly of The Wiyos – Joebass also runs Truthface Recordings/Studio 808A in Floyd, VA
Joebass is not currently touring with The Wiyos, but he plays bass on this video and I first saw him play in this band, a very formative influence for me.
Fiddle and vocals – Sarah Alden of Luminescent Orchestrii (and many other projects, but that’s how I first saw her), she resides in Brooklyn, NY
Check out Sarah’s website for more current projects.
Banjo – Lydia Martin of the Martin Family Band out of Fredrick, MD
– watch out for a solo recording that Lydia is working on!
Drum and Beatbox – Jabari Exum of Hueman Prophets and Farafina Kan a native of Washington, DC -
– check out his solo hip hop theater project!
Reproduction Banjo - Greg C. Adams of the Banjo Sightings Database and our own University of Maryland, College Park Ethnomusicology Program
– he’s also frequently doing events at Harper’s Ferry, WV
Mandolin and banjo ambush – Danny Knicely of many bands, including at one point the Danny Knicely Band, now known as Bluegrass and Beyond (this is my favorite song Danny sings, I was so happy he sang it at the cast party;), and the night this video was taken was Lydia Jade’s first concert, she was just 5 weeks old). Danny also plays with my husband Matthew Olwell in James Leva and Purgatory Mountain
- but Danny is so talented on so many instruments, so respected in the music community, and so generous with his time, he’s affiliated with more bands than I can keep track of!
Vocals – Aimee Curl of Furnace Mountain and she also sings with The Woodshedders, as well as being in demand for a variety of projects because of her incredible voice! We were totally delighted to have Morgan Morrison join us on Friday night to sing “That’s Old Time,” a song that she and Aimee co-wrote!
